Founded By Richard P. And Claire A. Kautz
Established August 21, 1973
Richard and Claire married in 1955 and he spent the next 12 years working for Claire’s father at Blake & Sons Glass Co. in Port Huron Michigan. Richard was admitted into the Glaziers Union in 1955 and became a Journeyman that same year. Needing to move to an environment more conducive to Richards’s health, Richard and Claire ventured to Hawaii with their three boys Richard Jr., David and Thomas.
During their seven year stay in Hawaii, Richard worked for three of Hawaii’s largest glass companies and invented the first frame bender used in the island state. While in Hawaii Richard worked on such projects as Financial Plaza of The Pacific, Gold Bond building, Pan American building, Hilton Hotel in Kona, Barking Sands on Kauai and many other projects.
Richard brought his family to Guam in 1971 where he and a partner opened Guam Glass & Metal. In 1972 son number four Peter was born. In 1973 Richard and Claire decided to venture out on their own and Kautz & Sons Glass Co. Inc. was founded.
Surviving super typhoon Pamela in 1976 along with the rest of the island particularly brought to the forefront the harsh demands of the islands environment. Richard recognized that Guam indisputably needed windows and doors designed to withstand high winds. Based on this he put to use his engineering skill, developing heavy duty frames and opting to utilize thicker glass and devised a method for anchoring these more securely to concrete openings. Richard also developed an aluminum flush panel door that would inherently be termite and corrosion proof.
Kautz & Sons Glass Co. Inc. is still a family owned business that custom fabricates products to meet the specific needs of the people and the demands of the local environment to this day.
